It is generally assumed that the guy should always make the first move. Why? Well, no one is really sure; perhaps it is a sign of a man's courage and 'manliness'. A guy making the first move is the way that tradition dictates however in this article we will try to dismiss this tradition and make the girl ask you out and thus, allow her to take the initiative.

Most girls would prefer it if the guy asked them out first however there are a few exceptions. Essentially what has to happen if for you to reverse the traditional roles. Usually the girl is quite flirty and giving little subtle hints and signs that she would like you to make a move; now you have to do this. How? Well, if you have just met her then lean into her when you a talking. By this we don't mean move right up against her and whisper sweet nothings in her ear; unless the both of you are pretty drunk then this is a no go. Rather, just move slightly towards her when speaking and make sure you make eye contact should make her feel close to you and that you are interested in talking to her.

Your body language will have a big impact on whether or not she takes the initiative. If you sit or stand with your arms crossed then this is a clear sign that you are closed to any form of communication or that you are ill at ease. Instead open up your body a bit, sit up and raise you head; if done correctly this should give off the impression that you are relaxed and comfortably in her presence. Also it will suggest to her that you are open to conversation and intimacy. Furthermore perhaps drop the fact that you are single (providing you are single) into the conversation. Maybe if you are talking about ex's or relationships then say something like: “Yeah, my last girlfriend hurt me but I am ready to move on now”. By dropping some indications like this she will hopefully take the bait.

Hopefully by doing this above then by the end of the night she will have either asked for your phone number or asked you on a date; defying the fact of traditionalism. Although this is in no way guaranteed. If you feel that she is starting to the slip away from you as the evening goes on then maybe you should bite the bullet and take the initiative in asking her out first? It isn't a sure fire thing but if by this point she hasn't popped the question yet then there could be two things to think about

1. She is waiting for you
2. She just isn't that interested

While the above advice should signal your intentions and give her the opportunity to make the first move sometimes it is up to the guy to ask the girl; you may not like it but it could be the difference between getting a date with her and letting her slip through your fingers.
